Question A/C compressor WTF???

In the process of putting headers on my car, about 98% complete when this happened:

History: My A/c has had a leak since I bought the car 5yrs ago. About a can a year.

A few days ago I took the mounting bolts out of the compressor and moved it forward a few inches to gain more room while doing headers and motor mounts. Left all hoses connected.

When I started this portion of this project a week back on the bottom rear of the compressor by the longest mounting bolt to the rear, I noticed a wet oily coated area and I suspected it is where my leak has been coming from. So today I put it back into place and tightened down all the bolts that hold it on. While tightening the bolt mentioned above on the bottom, all of a sudden I hear a hiss and the sudden rush of refrigeration oil down my arm, something gave away and apparently the system discharged! WTF, is the compressor housing broke, is there a mystery seal in that area that from me tightening the bolt too much gave up the ghost? What could it have been? I know I need a new compressor but would like to know what happened while tightening a bolt cause it to leak out?

Any idea gents

This is not my pic but this is the exact leak in the exact same area...

You broke the seal in the compressor housing.
They have to be evenly torqued & to the correct spec.
Otherwise the case can distort & this is a result, all though it blowing out competely is the extreme rarity.

...take the hoses off the compressor, replace the seals, replace the dryer, vacumm the system and only then, fill it back up with freon.

Sorry bud but your compressor housing seal is done, I had the same condition as you where the previous owner was adding about a can a year but shortly after I bought the car it wasnt holding at all anymore and when I got under the car I saw exactly as what's pictured in your earlier post and since replaced the compressor and had no more leaks.
