Default Grinding sound while stopped in gear

Title says it. I have a 2000 TA A4. When I slow to a stop while the car is in gear I hear a grinding sound coming from the car. If I keep the car in place by leaving it in gear and keeping my foot on the brake (like at a stop light) the sound continues but if I push it into neutral the sound goes away. If I put it in park the sound goes away. If I put it into reverse the sound comes back. At faster speeds, +25 mph, the sound goes away. The sound did not start suddenly, at first it was subtle and only happened a few times but now it is very frequent, happens at every stoplight. Any ideas on what this might be? TIA.

Sounds as though it could be the torque converter coming apart. Though that could also make noise in park and neutral.

Is there any way to check for that without pulling the trans?

You would have to determine if thats definitely the source of the noise. There is really no way to tell by looking, even if you pull the converter you can't see inside of it.
