Default Firebird Headlights - Why do you hate me?

Have an 2000 WS6 that just got a bunch of work done to it. Included in the repairs were a pair of brass headlight gears into both the passenger and driver side headlight motors. Upon picking the car up, everything was just fine. Headlights working 100% as they should. I take the wife out for dinner the same night, drive home, press the lock button on the remote and the driver side headlight pops up then back down (no grinding/weird noises). Passenger headlight remains closed as it should be. I'm tired of throwing money at these stupid headlights. Since we know the headlight motors to be in 100% working order, what is left? Is there a headlight control module for 4th gen birds? Should I be looking to replace a certain relay? These ******* headlights are driving me insane!

yep I did brass gears. Went back to being trouble 2 weeks later. Problem is once you crack the cases open they flex even if you seal them well. Advanced auto has reman motors with a warranty. They are cheap.

Well if I buy new window motors and install the new brass gears in them won't I still have the same problem? In the brass gear kit they included two "T" brackets to prevent flexing.

Just realized this morning that when I turn my headlights on that only my drivers side headlight opens. FML

I'm not too confident in the AA reman. motors. Read the reviews...

No clue which brand you're referring to.

This is all I see for autozone. Not to mention if I bought one, I'd still end up prying it apart to install the brass gear - so I'm sure that lifetime warranty wouldn't work.

I'd prefer to buy ACDelco if anything. Anyone know if ANY manufacturer sells brand new window motors for these cars WITH a brass gear already installed?

This is a link to the kit I had installed. My mechanic noted that the driver side headlight already had a brass gear installed but that it was starting to show some signs of wear already. I wonder if the driver side motor is shot.

No chance you have a picture is there? Otherwise I'll likely end up buying an ACDelco unit and put the brass gear in.

I honestly was in the same boat as you and wound up not doing the brass gear and just getting new motors. They got a warranty and it's all sealed up so you don't need to worry about opening then resealing again.

Buy new motors and DONT INSTALL BRASS GEARS!!!!!!

If they break again then theres still a warranty and go turn it in. Thats what I do, why break apart a good motor just to put a "upgraded" gear in it?

After you do the fix.

Throw HIDs in foglights and disable auto headlights.
Use headlights seldom

Do not get the reman units. Order the brand new units from autozone or rock auto.

The reman's have horrible quality control and 90% of the time they install the motor back into the gear incorrectly

The new units with the screw covers are by Cardone. Beware, the wire seals on the Cardones could be suspect. Mine arrived from god-knows-where and the seals were too small for the connector. They rusted out in 3 months. (Hopefully they have found that problem and fixed it by now.)

For the OP - The brass gears are not always successful. The one you have in there is probably already stripped out. The motor body comes apart from the gear case, which can't be fixed. This is what leads to most of the stripping and it will also do in the brass gears.

For my $$$, I'd rather buy the Cardone motors and just replace the plastic gears every 10 years when they go bad. Its a lot less money, that way....

So if I buy new ones, what brand is best? Anyone have any experience with the AC Delco motors?

I guess I just wasted $100 on brass headlight gears, fml

those are them. new unit, screws, cardone. those are your three clues.

i think with the screw ones you can put the brass gears in, if you want

Yep, I did also. The instructions should have disclaimer that the gears may not fixt the problem where the motor is coming apart.
