coolant question

coolant question Ok sorry for asking this very stupid question in the first place. I used to be a mechanic and every GM car i worked on in my cars year range ran dexcool. My question is does my 99 ls1 camaro run dexcool? I don't see a sticker anywhere under the hood and as of right now someone before me put the green coolant in and I'm pretty sure that's not whats supposed to be in it.

Yeah, I do believe GM recommends that you use Dexcool. My car only had 67k on it when I bought it, but because it sat for 2 years before I picked it up, the factory Dexcool looked like poop and I just put in Prestone I believe, 74k as of today and no problems. Not that I think Dexcool is bad or anything, but I don't think it matters all that much if you flush your system routinely.

I've been running Dexcool since I bought my 1998 WS6 new......its always 100% clear, clean and zero poop.
But there's nothing wrong with running green......

This...either existing problems with the cooling system, or someone at some point has introduced green or plain tap water to dexcool causing it to corrode, gel...etc.

Dexcool is perfect......if the cooling system is perfect. People who have trouble with Dexcool, have issues with their cooling systems. Not bad issues, but something is not right, mainly they are not totally sealed and hold their seal.

Another long time, problem free dexcool user. I wouldn't leave any coolant in for 150k miles like GM says you can with dexcool, but as long as it's changed at reasonable invervals and the cooling system isn't leaking or contaminated, you won't have any trouble with dexcool that you wouldn't have with any other coolant.

Cause all your friends believe everything they read. The trouble with dexcool is you cannot neglect it and expect it to work flawless.
When gm introduced dexcool, everyone was used to popping the garden hose in the radiator and topping in off...quick lube places were and still are very bad about this.
Once the general public started having problems because of this, everyone and their brother jumped on The warranty bandwagon and dexcool was left plagued with a bad reputation. One that to this day still leaves uneducated people blaming dexcool for their own automotive ignorance...many of which are members of this board.

As I sit in my cavalier on my break, I have 176,364 miles on the factory fill dexcool. With only top off's by me with either distilled water or 50/50 dexcool.
The puke tank and everything else inside still look perfect. I just put a t stat in it a few months ago and everything down there was perfect as well.
