Default purge valve canister replacement help

I recently bought an 01' firehawk trans am and the SES light came on a month after I got it. I hooked it up to the scanner and the purge valve code came up so I replaced the one on top of the engine and deleted the code. Two days later SES light is back on so I hook it up again and it is saying the purge valve canister or something is bad, and I asked my mechanic friend who looks it up in the manual and says that one is on top of the gas tank. Does anyone know if I have to pull the gas tank to replace this or is there an easier way to do this or if this is even the problem?....it would be a real pain to rip out the gas tank for a 20 dollar part.

What is the exact code? Yes, the EVAP charcoal canister is indeed on top of the gas tank, and there's no easy way to get to it.
