I am definitely on board as well with a dry filter and really appreciate you guys all reminding me of the fact to steer clear of the oiled filters. Like I mentioned above my last vehicle came with an air intake with its vehicle package; which happened to be a dry filter and it extremely easy to take care of I also am familiar with the construction of the AFE filters and they use the more rigid material that a company like K&N only uses on the corners, though I bet most filter companies have examined their process of air filter manufacture because their seems to be less and less issues of people with filters pulling away from their housing of the filters

The smart choice is to go paper filter. But first you need to be informed as to why its better than oiled filters...in every way.
People that use K&N or other "oiled" filters never really enjoy PEAK performance out of their cars. WHY? Because the oil gets onto the MAF, and when that oil gets onto the MAF it decreases the WOT performance, because the MAF comes into play when we go WOT with the LSx engines. Also, even a freshly cleaned MAF and freshly cleaned and oiled K&N filter only lasts a little while.......because the second there's any fog, light drizzle or light rain fall or splashing through a puddle or other types of moisture...that oil gets re-activated and the oil blows right onto the air sensors on the MAF and then peak performance is gone. Also, there is ZERO horsepower gains to be made by going "oiled" type filter. Totally BS.....nuff said there. And since MORE small particles definitely get past these types of oiled filters your engine (the rings) take more abuse and wear then if you used a paper filter.

Paper filters cannot be beat for ring protection....and they do not decrease the engines performance from the oil getting on the MAF. And the power gains from oiled filters....complete bullshit.

I agree to both the horsepower and oil remarks. Again I was not claiming that I thought dropping in a K&N or purchasing a CAI was going to increase horsepower. I am interested on experiences with different CAI and filter applications. I have owned several f-bodies the 3rd gens have no aftermarket CAI, they are just too old, the only thing you have are aftermarket drop in filters or if you are have a late model 3rd gen model year 90+ that is running Speed Density vs. MAF then you can run a filter directly to the end of the throttle body - of course that sparks a debate of effectiveness since you are sucking in the hot air all around the engine. On my LT1 I ran the elbow and filter from LPE, seemed to be fine. I think a dry filter is the way to go, I don't think for the performance gain necessarily as much as having something that you can service just about anywhere and over the life of a vehicle is just cheaper can contantly purchasing paper filters. I have definitely seen more paper filters fail in daily use as opposed to aftermarket cotten gauze filters, though I have seen those filters pulled or sucked away from the construction walls, which is why I like the construction of the aFe filters - I guess like most modifications it comes down to perference.

I thought we were discussing NON-oiled, DRY, performance filters here, NOT; K&N/Holley/Green/etc. types.

It's all good to me, meaning the feedback and experiences. I just want to make sure the impression isn't that I think a drop in or CAI will just make the tires start to smoke all on their own

Okay went with the aFe filter, purchased it from Amazon. It fits decent but sounds like the Airaid filter might fit better from the posters earlier in this thread. Just waiting on some parts from Maryland Speed and I will leave the air intake alone
