Confused Here is the deal. We were running around all morning out in the county the other day and my volt gauge fell below 13v. Crap turned off the amp and we headed home.I've also noticed this around town but it never went below 13v. Later that evening I checked batt. 12v started the TA 14v
Cool batt. is going.
Ordered a new batt. from sears today and when I went to pick it up just for giggles I had the guy test it. He said it's fine
Could it be that when the alt is getting hot it's starting to fail?
I'm confused in the past it has been my experience that when they fail they simply die.

It could be. The voltage regulator is solid state and could be effected by heat. One thing you might check is the vent. There is also a fan on the back of the alternator and a tube that allows the hot air to be exhausted. You might check and make sure there are no obstructions, dead animals, etc. that have crawled up in there.
It's also probably worth checking your exciter wire.
