can i put on a '98 T/A rear end on my 2000 z28? Were the '98 trans am's auburn posi's or Torsen's? My z28 has a stock rear end which may be going bad, and if it's stock, it means it's a torsen if i'm not mistaken.
Is it okay if I install the '98 T/A rear in mine, like, will I feel any difference? The t/a rear end has done 97k miles and the guy says it was fine. I only need the differential in my car, as my bearings and axles are fine. So can I just have my mechanic swap out the diffs, or would just bolting up the t/a rear end be easier?

The '98 has the Auburn diff., vs. the Torsen diff. that came stock in your '00. Personally, having had both, I prefer the Auburn; it's quieter (no chatter) and feels more predictable (for lack of a better word) in certain manuvers.
If you plan to swap center sections, then the only real concern is if the gear ratio is any different between the two (resulting in an incorrect speedo if M6, or incorrect speedo plus shift points if A4; all can be fixed with tuning though).

Okay gotchya. What exactly are backing plates? The guy that is selling the rear end isn't familiar with this stuff, (apparently neither am I) so if I ask him if his includes backing plates, he might not be able to answer without me explaining what exactly they are. And are they essential for the swap, or can I just use the ones off of mine?
