[PICS] Power Steering Leak?

[PICS] Power Steering Leak?
I have started to notice little puddles of oil on my driveway recently and initially thought its oil. But when I looked under the car, it looked as though it was coming from the power steering pump area. My suspicions were confirmed when I checked the fluid level and it was well below the dipstick. Checked under the car and you can see how much fluid I lost already
Is this a common issue? Do I need to replace the whole pump? Just the hoses?
And last, is it safe to drive as long as the fluid level is ok?

it looks like it is actually spraying everywhere so i would suspect the High Pressure hose. pull off the black protectors and inspect the hoses.
Also while you are replacing stuff, i would ditch that stock power steering cooler before it explodes like the rest of them do.

Im having the same problem right now as well. The car was just pouring oil until I figured out it was the high pressure line. Bought some stop leak and it really helped, no leak yet just a small amount accumulating on the line.
The car isnt my DD so it will do until I have tume to replace the line, $45 give or take.

There are aftermarket coolers out there. Check out this thread:

I was researching all this stuff yesterday as well. I noticed some fluid leaking out the cap and on the power steering pump resivoir. I cleaned it off real good, drove it home (about 25 miles) and didn't see any more leakage. The power steering fluid level was good, but I did notice it's orange in color, which I believe indicates it's being mixed with antifreeze. I need to do some more research, but I think replacing the lines will solve your problem. I also read that putting a hair scrunchee thing around the base of the resevoir lid helps.

This is the mega-thread on the topic of the cooler: https://ls1tech.com/forums/general-m...g-success.html
If you take a look at the more recent posts you'll find actual temp measurements which seem to indicate the cooler does nothing. In actuality, if you read through the entire thread, you'll see it's actually a heat exchanger; functioning in the same vein as the coolant running through the throttle body.
I installed a Derale aftermarket cooler when I deleted mine; however, I would just install the new radiator hose and skip the cooler all together and be done with it if I had to do it over again.

Try replacing the return line and supply lines first and instead of going to the inline PS Steering cooler get an aftermarket one from Autozone or wherever and I attached mine to the bottom support underneath the radiator with zipties youll need to get some extra hose from autzone aswell it cost like 14$ and get new hose clamps preferably with the screw.
This will keep air out of the PS system and keeping it from overflowing and keep it cooler if ...it keeps leaking you have a seal starting to go in the Pump which is a 100$ for a new Cardone A-1 pump.......I believe its a reservoir seal .....dont bother buying seal replacements their cheap and go bad a couple months later just buy the reservoir and the pump together and it comes with a warranty ......youll need a pulley puller also before you can get to the bolts underneath aswell....GL
Make sure you spray something to clean up your alternator sooner the better

IF you plan on doing A LOT of autocrossing, or open tracking/HPDEs/lapping days/etc., I would invest in a stacked plate style cooler, vs. just the bendable aluminum finned ones. These are stronger AND cool better, but do cost a little more, sizes being equal.
