Change the Coolant Temp Sensor......
My 1998 PCM will not let my engine run its a failing Coolant Temp Sensor.....it barely starts, and when it does it backfires and spits raw fuel out the exhaust pipes. If you touch the throttle it stalls.
And NO......you will not always get an SES light or a code......
Maybe that's your issue too.....

LS6 is spot on with replacing the ECT.
If you have a scanner look at the what the ECT value is. I had a F250 about a month ago the CHT(does the same thing as a ECT does)that was bad and it was telling the computer it was -35 degrees and it was dumping a ridiculous amount of fuel. It wouldn't start unless you held the throttle to the floor which puts it in flood mode and shuts the injectors off.
