Default Can't get new starter in... Need help

Hey all. I ordered a new starter from rock auto and cannot get it in. The old one slides in as smooth as butter but I've been struggling with this new one for hours.. The new starter has extra bracing on it which makes it a lot larger and it's hitting a piece I've outlined on the block. Any suggestions or ideas would be great. Thank you.

Actually I ordered it from Amazon. This is the one here.

Did you get the longer bolt with the starter?

That looks like a larger diameter starter. Also, the housing where the bendix sits, is definitely different. Unless its just the picture, it looks bigger around then the old one.

I would send it back and just get the Remy Gold one I just put in (96220).

It fits and cranks perfectly.

(You still have an LS1 in this, correct? You did not swap in an LT1 or anything else, right??)

Yeah I got the longer bolt. The diameter is the same. I also believe that my Mac headers may be interfering with the install. I may consider removing one side to install this thing. I can no longer send it back.

Well I spoke to the manufacturer and they say that to install this starter I have to take off my Cat.. Which in my case is a Mac header. Damn so much for a 20 minute job lol. Maybe I should upgrade to full length...?

If its the same dimensions as the factory starter, why won't it slide right in?

Well the actual motor cover seems the same size but the bracket for the longer bolt hits the tab I outlined in the photo. I think if I move the header up I can slide it in and then lower. Either that or I'm screwed

Finally got it installed. Had to take my dremel and round out the "Mother" in photo 1. Also took a prybar to move the Mac header a smidge. After this experience I am 100% sure I will not be attempting to install my new Tick Master by myself lol. Thanks to all that tried to help.

Looks like the wrong starter. The stock one has a long bolt and short bolt. The new one you have has a full width casting on the side that accepts the short bolt. I ordered a power steering rack from them and got the wrong one. Just a mix up. Everything else from them has been spot on.

It does look like the wrong starter but it's just a newer design to prevent breakage like some folks have had here. I think if it was not for the headers it would have been a 20 minute job. It works great now that I got the bastard in there.

Glad to hear that you got it in there. I have had good luck with rock auto with everything but that steering rack. The neck was a different angle and wouldnt clear the exhaust. Otherwise they are a great place to find those tough to find factory style items.

I have a truck starter in mine along with a starter bridge I was unfortunate to have my previous starter crack off and I had a hell of time getting it in with the bridge I just jiggled it around for like 3 hours till I forced into place
