Default Strange windshield wiper problem

Car is a 98 Camaro.

I did a search and got nothing.

I don't believe the wiper motor is bad, because the wipers do work well. But when I turn them off, they stop in an up position instead of going down and stopping like they're supposed to. To bring them back down and out of my vision when not needed, I have to remove the fuse and lower them by hand. If I don't remove the fuse before lowering them, they will go back to the up position and stop, even if they aren't turned on. Any idea what could be causing this? A bad switch maybe?

What if you kill the ignition while they are moving and catch them in the down position. Then, while the car is off, turn off the wipers?

Or shut the car off and force them down?

I can only assume that the position mechanism being mechanical or electric is in the motor. But that's just a guess for me.

I've tried both, and each time, the wipers go back up and stop once I turn the ignition on again.

My wiper blades use to stop half way and to fix the problem I had moved the lever on the wiper motor almost as far as it could go. The piece that the wiper linkage connects too.

There is a plastic clip that holds them down that is probably broken.

I finally have time to fix this problem...
What do I need to do to investigate, remove the plastic cowl piece? I can't find the right size replacement nylon rivets.

Do they stop half way up? All the way up? Close to the bottom? You have a video of them working then parked?

They stop all the way up. I'll try to shoot some video later today.

Yes it is a problem with your wiper motor. It is a GM design flaw. There is an internal bump stop that sometimes breaks off and the wipers no longer park in the down position. The only cure that I am aware of is to change the wiper motor, as the faulty stop is integral to the motor.

One of my previous Pontiacs had this problem while still under warranty and that is what the dealer did, put in a new wiper motor.

I had to change my wiper motor... first time I used the wipers when I got the car they had a mind of their own... kinda scary when it started pouring rain..

found one off a 15k mile camaro that was sitting in storage for 12 years for $15 off Ebay and no more problems.

although the installation was a thorn in my side.

Thanks for the info guys.

I'm assuming changing it requires removing the plastic cowl trim. I still haven't been able to find the correct size/shape plastic rivets.

yes you need to remove the wiper arms and the cowl trim... because the entire motor assembly pretty much sits under the windshield

You can find replacement plastic push pins on ebay, but they are very cheap quality. I broke like 5 just putting them in. None of the parts stores had that style. GM would probably be the best source, unless they discontinued them already.

I Welded my bump stop in. Its a lil pin held by a rivet that's gets messes up and passes the bump stop. There for not stopping where it should.
