Default Auto shifter locking up

Hello all, I was going to post this in the auto trans section, but thought this one might get more traffic. Lately the shifter in my 02 Formula has been giving me some headaches. The button to unlock the shifter gets stuck and I can't put it in park or drive, it happens in any one at random. I've gotten fed up with it and just rammed out of that setting, and the damn button nearly fell out...
What causes this, I don't think there's any gunk in there, It really feels like it's just locked and won't disengage.

There is a lock ! I think there is a pin hole near the shifter somewhere. Stick a pin (.050) in it and it unlocks.

I know there's a lock, I was simply stating that I think it's that and not just stuck because of gunk. What causes it to stick is the question.

I was always worried about that myself on my auto, Im going to install my auto shift **** adapter with a HURST T-handle **** I just bought from AfterthoughtsAuto. That way when I shift all I have to do is push down, no button.
