Ignition lock cylinder

Ignition lock cylinder I noticed today that I can remove the key in any position after the car is started.. I figure its a worn out ILC and was looking to replace it..
my question is that will the new one need to be programmed to the VIN and or will it mess with the VATS system..
keep in mind that ever since I have had the car the Security light has been on with no ill effects so far..

ok.. I dug deeper and I would just need to have a new key made off the template of the key that comes with the new cylinder and have the corresponding chip put in that matches the same resistance as the old key
Bypass vats, take your current key to Home Depot or wherever and make a copy and be done with it. Unless you are dead set on a OEM key with working vats chip then the way you said above will work too.

It was back in 2009 when I had to replace my ignition lock cylinder but I got mine online. The store listed all the chips and their resistance values. Had the new cylinder and key cut for it shipped to me with the correct chip put in. I have the website but it is not a sponsor so I am not sure if I can post the link here.
