alternator question

alternator question My ws6 was reading in the orange while driving on the voltage gauge when I first bought it. I Bought a new alternator for no reason..later finding out it was just a red wire coming from the harness that conected to the pigtail on the alternator. It drove perfect 14volts since then.
Now its jumping from 10ish to 11. I redid the connection I did before just to be safe and still reading about 11 on gauge. Barely starting. Any ideas? I don't want to get stranded anywhere :/

I would start with taking to an autoparts store and having them bring out the tester they have, when I bought my Trailblazer the voltage was down real low like that and it turned out to be a BAD (like literally smoking, with a horrible odor) battery, replaced the battery and all was well, when my alternator in my firebird went out the "check gauges" light came on on the dash.
