Default Rear main seal alignment

Hello could anyone please give me instructions on how to align the oil pan and rear cover? My engine builder put the oil pan on and I put the rear cover on with a new seal but to me it seems to be a little uneven on top and bottom. It may be ok but I just want to make sure and do it right the first time

There is a sponsor on this list that sells a special tool to install the seal correctly.

I just use a straight edge on the back of the block to line up the pan.

Ok so there is no such thing as the pan being pulled up to close to the block? Just making sure that the pan and the back of the block is the only alignment for the oil pan?

I know I'm gonna regret this........the proper way to install that cover is with the oil pan off. It can be done with it on but you need to understand the seal area needs to be reasonably equal to the crank. When you look at the hole it should be equal all around. A few ways to do this is buy the tool, or use 4 equal spacers. Either way you need the seal centered on the crank and the bottom of the cover square with block. With the oil pan on I would suggest you loosen it enough so you can move the bottom of the cover even with the block. So Seal area even all around, cover square with the block, Tighten cover bolts, then seal and tighten oil pan to cover and block. I know can of worms.....Good Luck Grasshopper

This is what I used:
Works great. Pan was never removed. Replaced the cover gasket and rear seal. Did a test fire before installing trans. No leaks.
