Default Power steering question

I have a 2001 camaro SS. I just had my rack and pinion rebuily by Turn One. They are closed right now so i cant call them to ask about my problem and im an impatient person lol. So roughly my rack and pinion should take a gallon of power steering fluid since the system was dry. I added one quart, turned it lock to lock at least 50 times. Bubbles went away but PS fluid level hardly went down, mind you i only have one quart in it. I then had the girlfriend start it with cap off, she turned it lock to lock a dozen or more times. Steering felt fine and no noise coming from PS pump or rack, only noise was when you lock the steering just like normal noise. Level still didnt go down. I then took it for a ride around our round about, the steering felt very very loose which makes sence because of alignment needs done. Pulled into my drive way to check level, still the same. I am confused. Is my pump not working? I thought i would of noticed if it went bad from loud noises like everyone says. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys

Ohh reason why i had it rebuilt was because the input shaft seal went out.

The cavities in the rack are not that big, when I've bled them they seldom need more than a 1/4 cup of fluid.. Line routing makes the most difference..

Hello,

https://www.turnone-steering.com/blogs/tech-101/power-steering-faq
take a look at the how to procedures on our website to see how to bleed the power steering!

Thanks,
Bry

Ok see ive been reading guys saying you need 4 quarts. I get what your saying though and in reality if you think about how small the system is, i cant see being able to fit that much PS fluid in there.

Awesome! What a business. Now i already read all that and did that procedure. I guess what i read about 4 quarts was totally wrong. Now i will say when i did drive it, i turned the wheel close to lock, my car felt like the tires or something was skipping acroas pavement, is this due to the alignment and not tight steering? Its hard to explain.

My 3 series BMW won't even take a full quart from empty.. My jeep takes about 1 and 3/4 Quarts with a saginaw box and pump and external reservoir...

Just for comparison..

the "skipping" is most likely as you suspect the poor alignment, your pushing your tires one way or another from a poor toe setting. Get the front end squared up and your problem will go away.

Yea hopefully it will help someone down the road. If someone down the road (this is for the future) sees this post and wants more answers or help they can PM me. I hate reading a post and it dies an doesnt come to a conclusion.

So far the car is driving very smooth! I am very happy so far with the rebuild from TURN ONE! Did a excellent job and feels great! I would recommend them to anyone if you need a rebuild. Quality service! Plus very helpful if you have questions. Thanks everyone for the help!

I was going to say I just added an external power streering cooler to my Camaro on the condensor and I followed Turn1's steps as I have a Turn1 pump on purge and bleeding system and I used maybe 1 1/2 qrts.

BTW don't use ATF for yours fluid!!!!! With the ATF someone else put in the system was building too much pressure and coming out of the cap. The RP in the system hasn't had one issue.

I first replaced my power steering pump with a turn one. i drained my entire steering system of fluid, including the oem rack by undoing the hard lines from the steering gear and cycling the rack back and forth to squirt out fluid. The rack holds very little fluid, and the entire system at most 1 to 1.5 quarts if you have a power steering cooler. And of course a little more if you have an aftermarket remote power steering cooler. Following year I replaced my oem rack, and with the oem (upper radiator hose) power steering cooler removed I did not need more than a quart to fill the steering system.

you will know if there is air in the power steering system when driving. It will feel like the car shutters when turning the steering wheel. You will hear it and feel it in your hands when they are on the steering wheel. That's the power steering pump pumping air. You'll still have power steering and it won't be hard to turn the wheel, but it will take slightly more effort nothing dangerous could still turn wheel with one hand but it won't be a smooth effort. This is why its important to bleed the system and not have air in it and why it's ideal to get some kind of vacuum device and adapter, and put a 5" to 10" vacuum on the power steering reservoir while turning the wheels (when off the ground unloaded) lock to lock many times first with engine off, then engine on at low idle.
