1999 chevy 1500 odometer

if odometer on a 1999 chevy 1500 quits working and you fix the original speedometer ,will the mileage be correct,since the soldier was just bad,or is it off from the time it went out?

i could be wrong, but the mileage (i thought) was stored in the computer. the display is simply that.....a display
