I'm new here and new to the LS1 world. I am looking for a belt for my 98 Firebird that does not have AC. The previous owner installed the wrong belt on it, doesn't even match the grooves, what belt do I need? I have no clue if car has different pulleys on it. How do I check to see if the pulleys have been changed? There has been a lot of work done to this car but I do not have any documentation as to what was actually done. Current belt that doesn't match the grooves keeps moving out to this position.
IDK what kind of car you have but just go to any auto part store and tell them what kind you do have and get that belt. You could do this all online...
"if your pulleys have been changed to aftermarket ones...its a crap shoot for us to guess. If people put on "underdrive" pulleys than typically a shorter belt 1/2" to 1" is needed. Belt lengths are the last three #'s of the belt # and can be ordered per # vs application.
If you do have underdrive pully and it says what brand it is typically 411 about that pully if you google it will come up and say what belt to use
ATI underdrive balancer pully, for example, show what belt # to use with their pully
The AC is on a different belt circuit and has it's own belt.
Yes the AC is a separate belt, so if the pulleys are still the stock size a stock serpentine belt should fit.
You say the belt on there does not fit the grooves. Is it migrating out of the grooves? If it is then the belt tensioner may have been slightly bent. I did that once. I used a breaker bar on the belt tensioner to release the tension and used a little too much force and tweaked the tensioner and had to replace it because the belt kept moving out of the grooves. Try a stock serpentine belt, be sure to follow the correct routing diagram. People do weird **** sometimes. Previous owner might have it routed wrong, used a non-standard belt or who knows what.
Try the stock serpentine belt, route it properly. If it doesn't fit you will need to start measuring pulleys, etc. to find out what you have.
Ya'll ignoring the part where OP said his car does not have A/C?? O/P, can you post up a picture or two of the belt and pulley set up so we can see exactly what you're working with?

The A/C is on a completely separate system, with a separate belt, that is not involved in the serpentine belt routing. The serpentine belts for with or without A/C should be the same belt.

I changed the pulley on tensioner yesterday. I think the tensioner may be another reason the belt comes off a couple grooves. The tensioner tilts forward some when I put belt on it. If belt moves again I will buy a new tensioner.
