Default Electrical problems

When I drive the car it turns off the speedo and the RPM gauges also stay stuck when the car dies . I have replaced the battery and cleaned the terminals. If I try to start the car nothing happens there is no cranking and no instrument lights, then the car starts up about five minutes later with no issues.

The car is a 1998Z 28 with about 158,000 miles on it. I was wondering if it’s the vats There is no security light on the dash but these keys are 22 years old.

VATS will turn on the SECURITY light if it detects the wrong key resistor when starting or it will flash the light if it doesn't detect a resistor at all. Either case could be caused by the key or by other elements of the circuit but if the light works (goes on during bulb test) but isn't on or flashing when trying to start the car then VATS is not the problem.

The car has done this 4 times ,I checked the ground wires there good ,drove 20 miles yesterday car ran with no problems go figure.

One thing I'm thinking about is all the fuses that have probably been in the same position for all these years, maybe it can create strange faults due to poor contact or corrosion?

Could be anything I just don’t want to put an alternator in if it’s not a problem I can pull the fuses and hit them with some fine sandpaper.

After replacing the alternator and my O2’,the problem was my fuel pump .I went to buy an pump from Chevrolet dealer and they said 1998’sare discontinued. I found a Delphi fuel pump on Summit racing part number HP 10038 .Anybody hear good things about Delphi pumps ?
