- shock
- spring
- ball joint
- motor mount
- tie-rod end
- control arm bushings
Quick Tests:
- lift car. grab front tire/wheel at 12 & 6. attempt to rock it a bit. if it moves/clunks, then ball joint has failed
- lift car. grab front tire/wheel at 9 & 3. attempt to rock it a bit. if it moves/clunks (without steering wheel turning), then tie rod end has failed
- look at spring for crack.
- look at shock for leaked out fluid. grab shock and tug/push to see if sideways movement.
- while parked. open hood and look at engine while someone revs. if engine jumps more than a little, could be worn engine mounts.
Usually the issue is suspension and not engine mount though. Driving around you should be able to tell which bumps in the road or which maneuvers while driving cause the noise. Then you can focus on that area of the car.
But more news! This probably wasn't the noise. This is my brother's truck and he drives around in Auto-4X4. Once this is turned off, the noise is gone. I'm now thinking:
-CV
-Transfer case
-Driveline
This truck has over 300k miles and hasn't had a nice life. We discovered the motor mount by accident =-)
