Rear cover miss alignment.
Rear cover miss alignment. So I had an engine put together by a shop, when I bolted the oil pan on it cracked the ear off beside the oil filter, come to find out the rear cover overhangs down past the bottom of the block, pass side is fine and shop said cover was installed with alignment tool. What are my options to get it set in place now, shop told me to loosen bolts and tap it up till its flush

I would assume they used both the proper ones, it was done by an engine shop which is 9 hours away so now I'm on my own to fix it. I've seen lots of people align it without tools and had no leaks.
You'll also need to change the oil pan, now also. I just did the same thing - except I torqued that bolt (by the oil filter) with the transmission still bolted to the oil pan. ...CRACK After I found my error the oil pan still leaked at that corner.

BTW - I just saw SacCity's video and they also have a different tool for re-aligning covers with the seal already installed.
Eyeballing to get the front and rear covers level with the block has worked for me time and time again. No special tools needed just a common sense approach and you could even use a straightedge and feeler gauges if you want to get technical. Another way is to leave the front and rear covers loose and then lay down the Permatex on the corners then put the oil pan on then tighten the front and rear covers last.

If the seal is already in the cover, no tool is needed. Just the feel of your fingers. Making sure the cover is flush with pan rail on block. Too easy. But if no seal in cover, a special alignment bushing/tool is required. So Install seal in cover first to ease installation. We have the full Gen 3/4 kit here at work (dealer) but I own the Sac City kit and use it when I need to.
But on the concern, if the cover is overhanging down below pan rail, then the shop screwed up. Whether a tool was used or not, someone screwed up.
