Weird check engine light situation...

Default Weird check engine light situation...

So today I was sitting in the driveway with my car idleing. Suddenly I got a flashing check engine light. It flashed a couple times and then went off. I grabbed my scanner and couldn't find a code. So I took the car for a drive to see if it would happen again. No check engine light.

I got to thinking maybe it could be a dirty MAF. After getting home, I pulled my lid and found a couple blades of dried grass on the MAF screen. Not sure how my car sucked those up. Brushed the screen off and sprayed the MAF with some CRC electronic cleaner. Started it up and no issues. Hopefully that solves the issue. Guess that screen has a purpose other than straightening the air flow.

It protects the sensor elements, which are hair-thin, and can easily be destroyed.

If material is getting through, you should check your air seals. Make sure your air filter is seated correctly and that the back of the air box is in its slots. (It's very easy for the back tabs not to catch and people to fasten the thing down with the back of the box loose.) The bellows can also come looose, so you might also check those.

How comprehensive is your scanner? The MIL will only flash for a significant misfire, so there should at least be a P0300 pending or stored, and usually a cylinder specific DTC (P030x) would also trip. I can't see any situation where the MIL would flash but there would be no stored code, unless it was some kind of PCM failure/hiccup. If there was an actual issue that caused a misfire of that severity level, then a DTC should have been tripped. But depending on the quality of your scanner, perhaps it's just missing something.

In looking at your signature, I have to assume that the car has been tuned. I wonder if certain DTCs may have been turned off, hence no stored codes or lingering MIL for the event? Hopefully the issue doesn't return, but if it does then this is another thing to consider which might complicate any further diagnostics.

I might have found my issue. It seems when I cleaned my IAC port and put the IAC valve back in the Oring fell off. Maybe I was getting a slight vacuum leak.

Wanted to update this. Over the last month I've gotten a MAF code and an O2 code. Replaced the MAF and I think that's solved the issue. Have to do some more driving to be certain.
