Default Trunk doesn’t open from the first try

Hello, the trunk on my 2002 trans Am doesn’t open from the first try, I have to keep trying a couple of times before I can open the trunk, best way I can describe it is that at first it opens only Halfway up but I can’t reach in and open the trunk unless I click the button from the car or my key fob.
has anyone encountered this issue before? What would you suggest?

thanks 😊

Need to do the spring mod, whatever it was called. Was a big thing 20 years ago. Look at the lever that pushes the hatch up when it's released. You can either find a stronger spring, or add a spring to what's there.

The factory spring is too weak.

Here's mine. Been at least 15 years since I looked at it.
Next problem is it takes too much slam to close it.

thanks for replying brother 👍 you are correct. It does take too much slam to close it.

At first I thought it was the trunk rubber stops. But I think that doing the spring mod should be helpful in my case. How do I go about doing this spring mod?

thanks 😊

Update: I just saw a video on YouTube, I ordered the exact same spring he used. Hopefully this will fix my problem. Any idea on what to use to clean the area (trunk latch) before I install the extra spring ?

I just washed my car today and noticed that the trunk latch needs some detailing.

from my understanding, all I need to do is just attach or mount the extra spring on the oem spring. Please see the attached pic for reference. He inserted the extra spring inside on the bottom and on top.

do I need to add some grease to the hatch tab or the trunk shocks after adding the spring or is it an overkill?

My 2001 Z28 (Sara) has done this from day one, the first click on the fob opens the hatch just a little, the second click allows me to open the hatch all the way. I think it is perfectly normal..

All of my '99+ F-bodies have had this issue, even from brand new, and adding the extra spring will fix it. The '98s use a different latch without a spring, but I've never had this problem with my '98.

Fixed the hatchback problem, I noticed that the hatchback hinge and my door hinges and my hood hinges were all bone dry, I bought a tube of lithium grease, and with an acid brush I applied it to all the door , hood hinge, and the hatchback hinge. Now when I press the button inside the car, the hatchback will open on one press.
