Default no crank

It won't crank. The interior lights don't work when the door is open. With the key out, it makes a clicking sound behind the glove box. When I hook up the trickle charger, the clicking stops. When I disconnect the charger the clicking doesn't reoccur. When I tried to crank the first time, the speedo and tach needles went all the way and back. W-T-F?

Now when I open the passenger door, it clicks. So I close the door and open the driver door to no clicks. So I close the driver door and open the passenger door to no clicks. The interior lights still haven't turned on with all three door openings..

Your battery is not providing enough power for some reason, look for the reason. The clicking sound behind your glove compartment is the PCM or BCM trying to do it's job with inadequate power. Either the battery is dead and needs to be replaced or a needs a FULL charge, or the connections need to be looked at. The trickle charger can't overcome the bad battery or connections. Will the vehicle run if you give it a jump start?

Report back when you are sure that you have a new or fully charged battery and all connections are known to be good. Then it will be time to chase down a mystery problem.

Thanks for the reply. I don't have jumper cables. Maybe something is draining the charge as fast as it's being provided. So I disconnected the battery to see if it'll charge overnight. The v-o-m is giving false readings, so yet another device needs repair or replacement..

Please note there is a difference between a battery charger and a trickle charger.
  • Trickle chargers provide a low, steady charge for batteries not in use. (1 to 2 amps)
  • Battery chargers give more power to drained batteries or those in need of a quick charge. (2-10 amps)
I use a Noco Genius 10 to maintain my batteries if I don't drive in a while. I like this unit because it can charge AGM, standard, or Lithium batteries. It conditions my batteries so they stay as healthy as possible but it really can't charge a near dead battery. I have a charger too but really don't use it unless a battery has been sitting for a long time (when I bought my car I had it sit on the charger for a day and a half and that "brought it back")

If the battery is too low to power on the interior lights you will need to test it to make sure you don't have any dead cells. Once a battery is drained all the way down some of the cells can die off making it unreliable even if you can get it to hold a charge.

95% sure your battery is bad ...

buy this :
Amazon Amazon

you can also use a voltmeter if you have one. but it won't test the load/cold crank amps.

if battery is good, I would start checking all grounds

I'm using an everstart maxx 3-amp battery charger & maintainer, which now indicates a charged status. The car started and drove without hesitation on Monday. I've never had a battery go from working fine to complete failure in a day or two like this..

the battery needs to be load tested. Either take it to autozone/o'reilly to be tested, or buy a battery tester.

I reconnected the battery, and it started on the first crank. I ran it at 2500 rpm for a minute or so. The volt meter stayed just a hair above the middle mark. When I turned it off and opened the door, a warning bell sounded. So I found that the middle parking light switch was on, and turned it off, which stopped the alarm. Maybe I left it on the day before when rain mist happened and didn't notice the alarm as I exited the car. I should have found it when the no crank condition started, but I was distracted by the glove box area clicking. Inept troubleshooting has cost me before this time.

@jim9 Glad to hear you found the cause of the battery drain. The simple things often come back to bite us all from time to time. I think the advise on load testing is sound, especially as winter sets in. Deep drain and recharge can shorten chemical battery's lifespan. Battery conditioners are great but aren't a silver bullet. I have made it a habit to check on the car after the garage door light goes off to make sure the interior lights are off. I know my car will cut power to interior lights after a few minutes but I am still paranoid with leaving something on.
