Starter not engaging Circle D Billet flywheel
Longtime lurker that doesn’t post often.
71 Impala with a built LQ4 and a Whipple 3.0. After replacing my TC and flywheel both from Circle D. My starter doesn’t always engage the flywheel. Sometimes like earlier today it fires on first turn of the key. Other times it could be 6-8 tries. Doesn’t matter if I turn it off then try to start immediately or it sits for days. There is literally no rhyme or reason to when it happens.
Tried shims, worked my way up from 1 to 4 shims and no change. Did a voltage test and a voltage drop test, everything is fine there. On the voltage drop test the batteries were resting at 12.4 and dropped to 12.1. I’m running 2-AGM batteries due to the huge sound system. But as mentioned, the batteries can be at 14.2 when I turn the car off after a 45-60 min cruise and it won’t start. It’s a Delco starter part #19418859. Also this is a brand new starter as I replaced it due to this issue.
Attached a vid that I had to trim down.
