I've conducted a multiple year scientific analysis of various mouse repellents. One year I put the car in my back garage with bars of Irish Spring soap in strategic locations. Come spring, I found no chewed wires but the Irish Spring soap had chunks eaten. As for the health of the mice, I didn't find any dead inside the garage. I've tried dryer sheets and the mice seem to leave them alone. This past winter I tried Peppermint bags. I went back to the garage and found two of them to have been eaten into and and the contents spilled all over the engine bay. No dead mice were found in the garage. I also tried the walk in mice poison and at least one of them was eaten so at least that's one dead mouse for sure.

I use a few of these between shed and garage with a little peanut butter inside the lid for bait. Add 1 gallon anti-freeze to each bucket. This "pickles" them and no smell.
I have a barrier of river rocks and a retaining wall around my garage, to separate it from the lawn/grass of my yard. This really discourages mice from getting near the foundation of the building in the first place. Also a lot of feral cats living around my property. In my old neighborhood there were no cats, and mice were definitely a problem there.
Bucket + antifreeze sounds like a great idea too, if they are still finding a way in.

I bought a deterrent from Amazon. its speaker that plays different sounds. sounds of dogs barking, cats meowing, blue jays, hawks, doors slamming, even a rattlesnake rattle. etc... I haven't had a mouse in 4 years in my detached garage. I even left our opened bird seed all winter and it wasn't even touched. the sounds are irritating, especially the darn cat noises. so, I unplug when I am in the garage. best deterrent I ever bought
I have a mating pair of these in my yard.... very successful. I catch several small babies a year in my garage but they are harmless and usually come slithering right up to me. I pick them up and put them out in the bushes. what the adults look like
The adults are about 6 ft long.... and they keep to themselves. The babies i find in the garage are about the size of a pencil. Here is one of the babies I had crawl up to me as I was on my back under my hotrod getting it ready for a carshow.
