Default heating problem

ok first I want to say I have a completely stock 1996 LT1 Trans am.
The problem that I am having is the car will not heat up, it stays at about 170 degrees and will not going any higher. It will heat up only if I sit in the parking lot and let it warm up for about 20 minutes, but I get maybe two or three blocks away and the temperature down like a dam brick.
I have changed thermostats (to a 180degrees) and that did not help. I have checked antifreeze levels constantly and they are good.
Do you have any ideas I could try, because I live in Nebraska and the winters can be deadly with no heat and a 45 minute drive to work in the morning.

get a 195 thermo in there. thats a stock setting. let it warm up before hand. i crank my 96 every morning about 10 minutes before i leave and im down south. also throw the heat on full when you crank it. thatll get the water going through the heater core. dont wait til its up to temp before opening the heater core up. i cant think of anything else.

oh you are using an actual lt1 thermo right? a regular thermo from any other SBC will not work, and if you go to autozone they may give you the wrong one. thats been known to happen often.

I'm confused here... is the engine temperature not heating up or are you not getting any heat through the air vents?

In the winter, my temp. gauge stays at about 170 degrees F. But, I have no trouble getting any heat in the car.

There is no heat pumping through the vents, its not ice cold air but not warm either, and I have no idea what would be causing that. The guy at the auto parts store said could be the heater core but he wasnt sure, could it be that?. And if it is, how could you check it. (location?)

heater core is behind your glove box its easy to replace. Remember to take your old one up to auto zone for a core charge
