Default SES Light

Five minutes into my commute into work this morning, my SES light came on. This is the first time I've had any problems at all with the car, except replacing the battery. The car is still under the factory warranty (02 w/ 28k miles). I was wondering if it's best to take it to Auto Zone and get the code or just take it to a dealership and let them figure it out and repair it? Am I correct by assuming that it should be free for them to hook it up to the diagnostics and replace whatever is wrong? Thanks in advance for the help.

Take it to the dealer. If the car is under factory warranty why would you let some one at Auto Zone touch your car? There is no charge as long as you under the 3 years or 36,00 miles.

I would go to autozone and have it scanned but not deleted to see what it is. Code might be something stupid thats not worth taking it to the dealer. At least this way if you have to take it to the dealer you'll know if they try and screw you. JMHO

I'd also go to autozone first just to see what code it is, but thats just because I hate dealerships :o

How are they gonna try and screw him?His car is almost bone stock. As long as the car is under factory warranty without any crazy bolt ons they can't make him sign for any inspection time at all.I work as a Chevy tech in Chicago, are some of these dealers that bad out there?

take it to the dealership if it is under warranty...if not, there are plenty of guys in texas that are fellow ls1tech users that could scan it and find out for you

You have no mods (looking from ur sig) that would cause a viod of warranty. So they cant charge you for the inspection. I always like to take it to a dealership just because if it is something to be concerned with, they can do it the same day rather than go back to the dealership at a latter time.

Autozone can delete codes on an LS1? If that's the case, can they delete my AIR and EGR codes?

Same thing just happened to me....i have a 99 hawk with 35K on it. I put on a gmmg catback about three months ago and it just came on. Took it to autozone and got a code or p0430 or something like that...i figured my exhaust just made me do it...one of my friends reset my compputer and we are going to see if it comes back on. If not, then i think my exhaust just messed it up...but if it does, then it has to be a sensor or something. Just go to autozone, it is free and not worth the hassle of a dealership unless it needs replaced under warranty.

i washed my engine compartment one time and my SES light came on. went off a day or so later and i diddnt see it again. i would sit on it for a day or so, then take it to autozone if it doesnt stop.

they cant delete the codes for your AIR/EGR system, they can only clear them. if you have the system removed, they will just come right back.

Well the light did not come on this morning, but was on all day yesterday, wtf? I guess I'll let it ride for a few days or so and see what happens. Thanks again for all of your input.

I have had a few experiences with the dealership out here.....I just like to cover my back when it comes to dealerships.

One experience was up front the service writer tried to tell me I was going to be charged the $75 inspection fee because I no longer had warranty because it was over the three years. I still had 6 months left on the waranty. I had him look in the computer at the date of purchase, since it was right in front of him anyway. His response, "your right, sorry". From that point on I will never trust a dealership.
