Overheating What exactly happens when an engine overheats? My girlfriends mom had her engine overheat and it's costing them alot of money to replace it, so that's how the question came up. Thanks.

My two cents: The obvious is that the engine was low on water--thereafter its just a matter of time before the engine seizes. Assuming that the airflow to the radiator is not restricted, then look for any condition that will result in pre-ignition such as timing too early or too late. But, as Jancarich noted some serious problems that not only would cause heady overheating, but also contribute to (sometimes) severe engine power loss. A lot of us have been there.
There are a whole lot more things that can contribute to engine heating. My sources list at least 26 different conditions conducive to excessive engine temperatures.
