Default Spark Problem

it's weird... I had the car running just the other day and got it into the garage. Thismorning when I tried to start the car, it has no spark. Got fuel, and everything else, but no spark.

Ideas? Suggestions?

pull the wire from the coil to the opti and check if theres spark there...if so, it's your opti, if not, check into a new coil.

I replaced the coil last night, but I'll check the spark there anyway.

By the way my coil went out on my car and was still giving spark. You need to be careful of this because that can send you replacing your opti when you dont need to. I would get your coil tested for sure. Other things that can go wrong in this area of spark are ( optispark unit, opti harness,) (ignition switch, which has certain signs like gauge problems).
Start with the cheapest and work toward more expensive parts when replacing.

add ICM to that list. Run a resistance test on the coil, take the ICM to autozone and have them check it. Check your opti pigtail for corrosion. Wont hurt to take it out, spray it with electonics cleaner, and put it back on with lots of dielectric grease.

did all of this, still the same problem...
Sounds like the opti just suddenly died...

But it wasn't like any time before when it was going out. Before it has always been gradual...

Also, check the ignition module, distributor pickup, and crank sensor.

I'm taking the ICM in for testing thisafternoon, and I have another OPTI in the garage that we yanked off a friend's car last night just in case.

My car 96 Lt1 seems to be having the same problem. Its happened only 3 times in the last 7 months. It wont start now at all. Just cranks over w/ a strong smell of gas from the intake/filter area. After attempting to crank it over, and switching the key off it shakes violently.(from gas burning in the intake?) Ideas as to what I should do? I'm up in College Station, TX, if anybody near here can help me out. Thanks.

Dont worry about the crank sensor, it has no effect on startup, spark etc. Just there to detect misfires.

Found the problem!
ICM shorted out.

had good signal everywhere, but signals going in, weren't going back out.

Well i was just walking outside around 10pm and figured hey why not try and start the car up one last time. And what do you know, it freaking started. This is so confusing. Wont start, and just cranks on 5 seperate occasions over an 18hr span and then starts all of a sudden. Like I said this is the exact thing that has happened 4 or so times in the last 8 months. All with the car starting the next day or two so. Is my Opti going out? Ideas? But hey as long as it runs.

Also, anybody have any tips for replacing the unjoints in a 65 Chevelle. Never donw it before so it'll be fun? Also got to get a new tranny mount.

take the ICM in to Orilley's and have it tested. That's the problem mine had, just a short in the module. (the test is free )
