If you've never done it before but are comfortable working on the car, there are some good step by step instructions on ls1howto... http://www.ls1howto.com/index.php?article=2 ... just skip the cam swap parts.

Why does the head have to come off?

Head removal is fun.

Just remember to clean all the liquid and crud out of the the bolt holes in the block before you replace the head. you can use paper towels and an old long bolt that is ground down on each side....

You probably should replace the head bolts with new ones too. They are torque to yield.

make sure you mark the ignition coils with tape to insure they go back exactly as they came off.

What happened - bad head gasket, busted lifter?
