Default Plugs and wires

Are they hard to change in LT1's, because im sure my car has never had them changed and its to 93k on it now. Is it a DIY project or not. What are good plugs and wires and what do they run.

If its your first time....(sounds like it is) then, go ahead and schedule yourself a saturday morning.... Once you get the hang of it, you'll be able to change them faster. Yes its a DIY project, just takes time and patience.

what are some good wires and plugs? any specail tools to get down there?

NGK TR-55 plugs and MSD wires. No real specialt tips or tricks just reach your arm in there and be ready to be hurting later cause you will get a bunch of cuts.

I took a regular spark plug socket and cut it down so there was only about an inch of socket and the wrench fitting on top. This will make the conductor part of the plug stick through the ratchet hole in the top of the socket and then you can still get a wrench on it. Trust me, this helps A LOT! When you route the passenger side wires, make sure to route them out of the way of the belts with no way they could touch. Guess how I know this? I ended up running them in a totally different place than the factory. Oh, and even the 8.5mm's can fit in the stock wire holders.

I did the plugs on my old v6 camaro and it was a pain, took me two days, I'm going to do mine next week but I'm also installing headers so it will be easier. it will probley help if you have a friend, on my v6 I had my girlfriend hold the wrench from the top while I was under the car fitting the wrench onto the spark plugs, Also don't forget anti-sieze and the di-electric grease, it will help you out later.

IT is defanitly An ALL day project. If not two days and like stated earlier be ready for pain. I hope you don't work out to much. because small arms are a big plus. I think i still have chunks of skin and meat on the car.


But it can be done

After doing mine, there was a huge difference in idle and low rpm load (lightly pressing accel in, while keeping it in 4th) Had a slight stumble. Fixed that.

The best way to get to these plugs is pull your manifolds, buy longtube headers, and get the ThunderRacing / Taylor over-valve-cover plug wire kit.

Get a few different extensions, Sears sells a swivel spark plug socket that helps a lot, then just try and locate the plugs with your hand and have someone hand you the wrench. Jack the car up and reach around from the bottom. Also if you have big/fat hands you might want to find a skinny friend!

I chnaged my plugs in 2 and half hours my frist time i got most of the passenger side from the top sitting on the intake with out removing anything. dont worry i sat on blankets, my hands and arms still have wounds

i did this on an lt1 2 days ago, took me 7 hours NON STOP on a lift! and i have a ton of lt1 experience...good luck!

tr55 msd 8.5, did mine this past week, driver side took less then 1 hour and passenger side was 6+(stock manifolds) I had a missfire at 5000rpm and new plugs and wires solved this also smoother at lower rpms also.

#8 was a bitch
