Default Help $2400 repair bill

I need to get my Camshaft Posistion Sensor looked at. Its throwing a code.

First off does anybody have any how-tos? thanks....

Second.. I brought it to the dealer and he said I need to remove and replace the entire plenum to get at the Sensor. Why does it have to be replaced?? It is missing a bolt up by the front of the car on the passenger side.....if im gonna replace the whole thing i might as well get an LS6 intake (they quoted me at $818 for the part alone.....i could probly get an aftermarket LS6 one for cheaper than an $818 stock LS1 intake)

Est total cost $2400 dollars.

I have no tools and have never even done an oil change on a car so i dont know how id do it myself... But can any1 help me out cuz i dont even know how i can afford to pay for this

Thanks

where are you located? There must be someone local to help you out. They are ripping you off completely because they have no clue. Get another opinion from another place...or find someone local to just swap out the sensor. If you were here Id do it for $75 if you provided the part. And Id feel bad for charging that much...lol.

You need to find another mechanic asap. The cam position sensor is retained by one bolt and the part costs about $52 from an auto parts store like Auto Zone or Advance Auto Parts.
Labor to remove and replace the intake plenum should be less than 4 hours....at $70 per hour for labor it should be (at most) $280.
An LS6 intake manifold can be had for around $400 from any of our sponsors with the appropiate coolant tubes and such. There should be no additional charge from the mechanic to install the LS6 intake manifold (since the original has to be reinstalled anyway), but he would probably want a little extra for the coolant tubes.

Maximum to replace the sensor...$350. Charging any more than that is unethical.

Not necesarily true. If youre going to reuse the existing intake, you can leave the fuel reails intact, which makes life much easier.

When I had to check my cam position sensor, it tooke me about an hour to pull the intake, check pull the sensor, reinstall sensor and reinstall intake. It actually took me longer than that because I cleaned out all the dirt with a shopvac. Just be careful not to break the oil pressure sensor.

To pull the fuel rail/injectors off of the intake takes at most 30 seconds.

Yeah, but a mechanic will charge you $0.35 more for those 30 seconds.

Well, not having done this, I dont know how difficult it is. I assumed once you started playing with fuel lines it gets messy and time consuming. Sorry for the misleading info...

Use ls1howto.com and find the LS6 intake swap one. It takes about 60 minutes to remove the intake with hand tools( sockets and pilers ) along with all the accessories attached to it. The cam position sensor is at the back of the block right by the end of the valley cover.

Sounds like this mechanic would charge a few hundred dollars for those 30 seconds

Just because you have to take off the manifold does not mean you have to replace it. I would be interested to know why they feel you need to replace the intake just because you are taking it off.

Not replace as in "buy a new intake manifold".....replace as in reinstall the intake manifold you removed to get to the cam position sensor.

I am having the same error code for the cam position sensor and it takes 3 or 4 complete cycles of the key to get the car to start. I read somewhere that the PCM "guesses" as to the cam position and rotates 180 each time till it fires. My question is if I were to replace my own cam sensor isnt there some PCM Relearn procedure to calibrate the system to recognize the new sensor, or is this only if you replace the Crank Position sensor?
Any help with this would be appreciated.
Thanks

Cam sensor is only used for fuel timing. when inop pcm has no clue when to inject fuel into cylinders. It atempts to use ckp for timing. There is no relearn for the cmp, only ckp.

go to sears and buy a 100pc mechanics set and thats all you would need to take things apart on our cars....where your gonna be working, 8mm, 10mm....thats its. maybe a few 15mm if you need to get to the cam sensor. oh and a pulley puller. thats about it....
