Default Hesitant to start sometimes...

Lately, my Z has been hesitant to start.

It's not a daily driver... mainly I drive it on the weekends, and on Fridays to work. The rest of the time it's in the garage.

I've noticed that if I don't fire it up until the weekend, it won't want to start at all... like the battery is dead (ticking noise). You can tell the car *wants* to turn though. Eventually, it'll turn... and fire right up.

So I've been getting into the habit of firing it up every other day or so and letting it idle for 5 minutes or so, then shutting it off. Today my wife went to use the Z, and she said it started up fine, but was a little "sluggish" starting up when she first turned the key. Again, after it was running it was fine.

Battery seems to be getting a great charge, so I know it's not the alternator. I doubt it's the starter because once the cars been running, it fires right up as it shoud. It's only when it sits for a few days at a time.

It sound to me like maybe the battery is going?

Does anybody else who keeps their car garage kept during the weekdays have this problem, too?

Sounds like you have the right voltage but the cranking amps are low. You could have the battery tested for free at advance auto or autozone or something like that. I would bet that your battery is almost done. I keep mine in the garage on a trickle charger. The battery never gets week. Its possible that there is a bulb on in the car somewhere like in the glove compartment or something causing a slight current draw. I would double check that at least. good luck. If you have an older battery > 4 or 5 years, I would get a new one. Keep a set of cables in the hatch just in case.

Well, the battery is the original... so you figure it's close to 4 years old already. Luckily, there is a brand new Advance Auto Parts in my town (Clovis, NM is pretty isolated) so I'll swing by there and have my battery tested.

Trickle charger, eh? I may have to look into getting one of those.

I know for certain that there are no constant bulbs on... already checked that. I think it's probably be the factory alarm that could be draining it, and it's finally taken it's toll on the battery.

Yep...

Went to our new Advance Auto in town and got my battery tested. On the first test it dipped into the low 7 volt range, then on the recharge test it jumped back up to 13 volts, but didn't keep it long.

On the second test, it dipped into the low 7 volt range again, only this time on the recharge test it only jumped up to the 10 volt range.

The battery tester said the battery failed after the 2nd test... so it looks I'll be shopping for a new battery this weekend.

Thanks for the help, fellas!

Yep... exact same thing happened to me. Your battery is probably going dead, too. Get it tested... then if it is infact the battery, just buy a new one. I bought a new battery and she fires right up!

Luckily batteries aren't that expensive.
