Default My baby is overheating!!! HELP!!

Ok, heres the story, my 98 Formula w/ just under 80k miles on the clock and its getting REALLY hot. I went for a short drive to home depot and back no more than about 20 minutes total and less than 15 miles on this trip and by the time I got home my water temp gauge was reading nearly 260!!! Recently the fan has been staying on when I shut the car off for a few minutes . But I had just attributed it to the hot weather ( about 90 - 95 degrees). But now I know there is definetely something wrong. My best guess would be that the water pump needs to be replaced. Or the thermostat. or possibly the radiator just doesnt have enough water in it ( couldnt check it since its not smart to open a pressurized radiator at 260 degrees F) Is there anything else it could be and is it safe to drive it to school tomorrow about 30 miles round trip ?

BTW the trip to home depot and back I'll admit that I was getting on it quite a bit more than usual and my drives to / from school are always kept under 2k RPMs

I wouldnt ever risk that to be honest man. Its better to ask someone for a ride than have to rebuild your engine. And if you havent checked your coolant yet..... id say thats a good idea

Check your fans!! I have had problems with two of my prior LT1's getting hot and it was always the fan not engaging.

My thermostat stuck closed on mine which caused the same thing, it's worth the twenty bucks to go ahead and replace it especially with over 80,000, just to be safe

I wouldn't think so, unfortunately my Z-28 got so hot the computer shut the motor off and it didn't do anything luckily. I wish you luck but most likely your car will be fine

Default heat

I had heating trouble with my lt1 also got hot for no reason up to redline.

changed the waterpump, still hot, changed the thermostat, still hot, checked hoses and fans. they worked fine.. turned out I had a very small crack in my radiator.. changed that now its fine.

Mine did something very similar and it was the water pump. Does the temperature get better at high speeds (i.e. moving more air through the engine)? Check your fans first, but get it checked SOON or you'll regret it.

Well I got her fixed. It was a combination of two things. First the thermostat was very very sticky and definetely was not opening. Secondly the radiator was caked with salt and sand on the outside which could only have a negative effect on its cooling ability. After spending about an hour trying to get the fan off of the radiator (WHAT A PITA!!!) blasted it with the hose and got all the sand and salt off of it. Now it runs better than when I bought it. The SES light was on for a little while ( I'm guessing because the radiator was half empty after my dad tried to open it when the water was 260 degrees and ended up all over the driveway) but after I drove it a few times the light went off! So this one had a happy ending. Thanks for your help guys
