major problem - thud, console shaking

I'm driving home tonight and i feel/hear a loud violent thud under my car. I though i ran over an animal. So, i back up and i hear it again but there is nothing on the road. I drive further down the raod, and keep feeling a "thud" directly under my console. The console even shakes. The car shifts fine and seems ok other than this. I noticed the other day when i was speed shifting that the console shook really bad when i shifted. Please help me. What could be wrong? Could the tranny be loose, maybe tranny mounts?? I cant look at the car now cuz its late and dark outside. thx -matt-

I would look at either your tranny mount or toqure arm mount both are prone to breaking.

If your running an automatic transmission, you broke the rubber transmission mount. just replace it with a polyurethane mount and never worry about it braking again...

its a manual tranny, i'll look at the mounts in a bit. thx

i took the tranny mount off, but nothing looks cracked. Just looks like a normal peice of large rubber. There is a peice next to the tranny mount, closer to the driver-side, that swings back and forth. What is this. It almost looks like it is meant to pivot where it is at. It just swings back and forth. Is this the torque arm mount and is it suppose to move back and forth? Also, would the torque arm mount cause the "thud" and banging in the console? How am I suppose to know if the tranny mount is broke, what do i look for? Sorry for all the questions. Thx. -matt-

Mounts dont have to be cracked to be worn, they can just be too soft from age/mileage. I would also check that theres no play on any other components, not sure about the pivot piece you are talking about.

im going to replace the tranny mount, if that doesn't solve the problem, i'm going to look into the other peice (after i figure out what it is) thx -matt-
