Finally, an A4 shifter rattle fix!
First, remove the shifter handle from the lever by pulling the larger staple out on the back of the **** with the screwdriver and pliers. You DO NOT need to remove the smaller staple that holds the button in. Don't lose the parts of you do take it apart.
(NOTE: this first step about quieting the button rattling is not necessary on all cars) Push the big shift button in and tape it there. Place a few small dabs of RTV on the inside of the **** where the button has room to vibrate in order to damp any movement. LET IT DRY!!! Remove tape and check for a free action. If all seems ok, move on. If not, pull out any excess sealant.
If you skipped the first part with the button, start here. Smear a bead of RTV on the black part of the shift lever on the console, but do not get any on the white nylon rod on the inside. Also, smear a small bead on the inside of the shifter handle near where you took out the large staple. Before it dries, reassemble the shifter and ****, touch up between the handle and **** where some sealant was just pushed out, and LET IT DRY OVERNIGHT. There you go. It shoudn't ever rattle again, hopefully. And if it does, the RTV is weak enough where you could still pull the **** off if you ever had to. Done.
