Default Reading Lamp?

98 Z28. The passenger side reading lamp in the rear view mirror is coming on when I hit a bump. Then slowly fades off. I looked the mirror housing over to see if I could get in to clean contacts or whatever but couldn't find a way in.
Any ideas appreciated!

The service manual seems to skip over those when talking about how to replace bulbs, unfortunately. You might try prying with a flat-bladed tool (i.e. screwdriver), have to do that for some of the others. Could be that you'd just have to replace the whole mirror assembly (which comes with the bulbs in it).

The electrical cable connector plugs into the top of the mirror near where it clips to the support; you could try disconnecting that and cleaning the contacts at that connection.

The white wire (terminal A) and the dark-blue/white wire (terminal C) connect to the BCM (branching to all the other courtesy lamps along the way). The black wire (terminal B) is a ground wire.

Here's how to remove the mirror if you need to get a closer look at it:

Rearview Mirror Replacement

Removal Procedure

The inside rearview mirror is fastened to an inside rearview mirror support. The inside rearview mirror support is secured to the windshield.

1. Disconnect the rearview mirror electrical connector.
2. Remove the rearview mirror from the rearview mirror support.
- Use one hand in order to support one end of the rearview mirror against the windshield.
- Use the other hand in order to pull the rearview mirror away from the mirror support.

Installation Procedure

1. Center the bottom of the rearview mirror to the top of the mirror support.
2. Slide the rearview mirror onto the mirror support. Keep the rearview mirror parallel to the windshield.
3. Apply 90 N·m (20 lbs) of force in order to fully seat the rearview mirror onto the mirror support. An audible click will be heard when the rearview mirror is fully seated.
4. Connect the rearview mirror electrical connector.

The bulbs themselves are relatively easy to access by prying the covers off as you suggest. I'll clean the electrical cable contacts next and cross fingers.
Many thanks for the info!
