Question Change Oil Light....

Does anyone have any idea why my change oil light stays on for a little while after starting the car? Besides the obvious of course, I have checked the oil (which only has 1000 miles on it) and it is well within operating range, and the oil pressure seems to be normal as well. It stays lit up while idling, but shuts off by the time I shift into 3rd, and doesn't come back on until the next time I start the car. Any help with this is much appreciated.

It needs to be reset! Turn key to on, not start. Push and hold trip/oil reset, till it flashes and you will be set.

Best do do this after you change your oil each time. Note the car caculates your oil life by miles, rpms, and mph. to determin when your next oil change will be. Than the light will be on for a while at each start.

CHeck owners manual, it has a good discription as well if I missed something.

Is this the procedure for the M6? My '00 A4 car is a little different. You still turn the key on, but then I have to push the accelerator pedal down to the floor three times (and within 5 seconds of each other).

Its the same procedure for the A4.

It seems that the oil light can be reset both ways.

I've reset it with the trip button before so I know it works.

My local dealership told me to use the gas pedal. I wasn't aware of any other way of doing it until today. That's at least one new thing I've learned today.

As it turns out, I need to reset my oil light anyway. I'm going to do it using the trip button this time. Thanks for the info.

Gas pedal??? New to me. Must have designed it this way so you dont have to loose that section of trip miles, if your into keeping track of your trip miles.

Good point regarding the trip miles. I use the gas pedal method on my 'bird and my Silverado. Just press it to the floor three times, and the little light disappears .

Wow, interesting. I'm not used to this crazy technology, I never had it in the ol' 89 Iroc. Sad thing is, the old owner wrote down when he changed the oil last, and i just changed it, and when I looked at the miles it was roughly around a new change from when he last did it but I didn't think there was any way....This site is awesome, thanks guys.

On the 2000 Z/28 A4 I turned the key to run and then held the trip/reset for like 10-12 seconds and the light flashed off and then I was done.

Interesting, I wonder why they dont mention the accelerator thing in the manual. Mine only says to do the trip button, would have been nice to know a couple of times when I was trying to calculate my mileage for work, lol.

Thanks for the tip, ill try it in my '02 next time!

I knew the guy that was the service manager at the dealership shortly after I bought my car. It sounded crazy at first, but I figured he knew what he was talking about when he told me to do it
