Default MAF question

I want to see if my MAF is bad, I heard I could disconncet it and it the idle and shudder are still there then the MAF is bad. Now would I just disconnect that plug connecting to it I assume? Is it safe to do this at idle and driving it? Will this set off a code!? Lastly what does the MAF sesnor do excatly, I have a idea,but you know.

it wont rev up past 3k if its unplugged, yes it will set a code (dont drive with it unplugged ) the MAF meters the air comeing into the engine then the pcm judges the correct fuel table to use

So I started it up with the sensor that goes to the MAF unplugged, still idled rought and did not get a code. Is this a sign that the MAF is bad?

dont give it too much gas, but rev it up a little bit. Having your MAF sensor disconnected should definitely give you at lease a code and/ or an SES light.
rough idle could be lots and lots of things. Vacuum leak, plugs, wires, plug gap, bad gas, coil going bad. Try to narrow it down a little.

Well think plugs & wires are good, as well as gas, its possible I could have a small vaccum leak but would that cause shuddering as I drive as well? What is involved with a coil goes bad? I did not get a code at all with I unplugged the MAF.
