power steering pump leak

power steering pump leak ok when i go to clean up my car i usually clean under the hood and in the engine com.. well when i do this there is a line of fluid (darker fluid) sprayed across the underside of the hood..ive just ignored it and cleaned it up but yesterday i looked into it and found out that i guess the powersteering pump is leakin on to the pully and slinging it on the hood( the oil line is directly above it) is this normal ( i doubt) and can i fix this and if not how hard and expensive is it to replace it...thanx...
when i had my powersteering pump replaced (at 42k miles) it cost me $310 and that was getting the pump at wholesale and having the labor run internally so id guess the it would cost the avg guy ~$400 to get it replaced (parts/labor)
It is not uncommon but you don't see it a lot. It is possible to have just the front shaft seal replaced on your pump. But most shops will opt to just replace the whole pump because it is easier. replacing the pump isn't that hard to do you will only need some simple tools.
I had a similar problem 2 weeks ago. Turned out to be the reservior bottle on the power steering pump that had a real bad leak. The pulley would then shoot it everywhere. But changing the pump is easy. Got to an Auto Zone and tell them you need the power steering pulley remover/installer kit. They rent it out for $40 plus tax. Ask them how it works cause when you first look at the kit you're like, "what the hell is this"? Anyway pull off the PS pulley and then start taking off the bolts which hold your pump. Take the pump back to Auto Zone and get a new one for $49 when you give them the old one. And if it's the reservoir bottle then you can get it at the Stealership for $60. And if you're wondering, you can only take the reservoir bottle off when you take the pump off. Don't do it like me and stare at it wondering how it comes off.
