Default Need some help choosing an oil

Well my next oil change is close enough to think about changing what kind of oil I use.

I currently use Quaker State Higher Mileage formula 10W-40. Well recently a Wal-mart went up in the area making it only a few bucks more to put Mobil 1 10W-30 Synthetic in. First of all I know that Synthetic is better and you all swear by it etc. etc. but I do still have a few questions

One: Should I expect to see any sorts of issues changing from a natural oil to a synthetic oil assuming this motor has seen nothing but natural oils through its entire life ? Is it still a good idea knowing that fact (~85k miles on it by the next oil change)

Two: I have heard conflicting things about the life span of synthetic oil, I have heard that synthetic will break down to essentially water if you dont change it every 3,000 miles exactly but I have also heard of people running synthetic to 8,000 miles without changing it. Which is true?

Please dont tell me to search because I have and still want more info so thanks alot in advance guys!

Changing from conventional to synthetic is always okay, it is not okay to switch from sythetic back to conventional, however. I run Mobil 1 10W-30 with 90K on her and have never had a problem. I change my oil every 6K. I also buy it at Wal-Mart (they sell the 5 Quart container for like $25), so I pick up an extra quart and my oil filter at AutoZone for $10.99.

id go with M1 5W-40. I just switched from the 10W-30 and have had way better oil pressure. You can find it at Wal-mart in the 5 qt. jugs for like 21-22$. I use a WIX filter from Bennet auto supply thats like 4.80.

What would you consider better oil pressure?

With the 10W-30 it would be right on 40 psi most of the time. In the summer(Florida) it would dip below many a time.

With the 5W-40 it stays between 50-55 psi. Rarely goes below.
