Default Checking Alternator

How do I check if my alternator is doing what it's supposed to? Car has been acting weird on start up latley. I check the battery, and it's pulling 14.5 volts. It's still good I guess.

start the car til it's running and take off the negitive cable from the battery, if it's still runs then your alternator is doing it's job.

Bring it to autozone and they can test it in car,I heard that take cable off test is for when cars had generators not alternators. From what I have heard you could damage the alternator or computer with voltage spike.
