Default Mass Air Flow Sensor Question??

I have a 99 Tahoe (Old Body Style) with the 5.7 and the check engine light came on. I had it scanned and it was a MAF code. It has been missing a little but not sure if that is what it is or what. Runs good the you park some where for 5-10 mins and the leave and it cuts out. Anyone had any problems with their sensor and has it acted like that I was running a K&N air filter but took it off and put the factory one back on after the trouble started.

just a quick question, did you happen to recharge the K&N before all this started to happen?

The oil from the K&N might be hitting the MAF and tripping the code.

Try to keep the paper one in there and reset your codes and see what happens.

Peace,
Craig.

you can usually clean the sensor with the areasol cans that you buy at a computer store to clean the contacts.

All the above. It's likely that an over oiled K&N has coated the MAF with oil. Be very careful not to damage the tiny wires while cleaning the MAF. Once the oil is removed, re-set the codes & run on the paper filter to see what happens. It only takes a little oil (trace amount, a light dusting) for a K&N to filter properly. If all is ok after a week or so, clean the K&N filter, lightly cote it with oil & try it again.

just want to add, let the filter completely dry, if you dont have to go anywhere, let it dry over night, dont want to rush it or you'll be right back to square one.

Thumbs up

I think that was the problem. I took it apart last night and it did have a film of oil on it and it was covered in dirt and dust. Cleaned it with Q-tips and it seems to run fine now better than it has in a long while. Thanks guys. Here's a pic you can clearly see the dirt and grime caked up.
