Default New Keys at Ace?

So I went into Ace Hardware for some misc. supplies, mostly sandpaper and some bolts, and in the back of the store there is a key duplication center. So i see some chevy keychains and I stop over just to see if they have anything worthwhile. As I stop by I notice some Chevy/GM shaped blank key fobs. Surprised, I took out my key's and asked the guy at the counter if he could duplicate'm, he said sure and before I knew it, i had a new set of key's. I never knew Ace did this, i knew they did regular household keys and stuff like that, but never automotive. Just letting everyone know, I thought it was interesting

yah sorry i should've been more specific, yah they did make me some trunk keys. Better to have one when you're locked out, we Fbody owners are lucky enough to have the luxury of being able to enter through our hatch if possible as a last resort lol. I have one at home and one hidden secretly outside of my car.

I got an ignition key with the chip cut from the ACE here and I think the cost was about $25, I really needed to get one so I really never checked the price compared to the dealership, but the ACE here does cut them.

Did you have to get the chipped key from somewhere else and bring it to them to cut it?

Granted I see the point of not duplicating the chip keys for security reasons, but if you're a legit owner of a car [say you provide proof of insurance or something] it'd be nice if they supplied and could cut the keys. There's only 12 chips if I remember correctly... it's just a little resistor. They could just hook your key up to a multimeter to see which chip it is, then depending on the resistance they can just cut a key using the same chip.

When I went to Ace, they made my ignition key and programed the chip.

Are you saying you bought the key blank from Ace, they cut it, programmed the chip and it works in your car?
