Default severe severe shakeing

when im going down the highway at about 60-70 plus, my car begins to shake violently, to the point where i have to grip the steering wheel tight. I can feel the car shake in my seat. The car has 65k and is completely stock. Im sure there are many types of causes for this severe shake, but could anyone please list the most common? (i searched, but found nothing really helpful) perhaps my engine is misfiring at high rpms? a warped rim? any help would be great.

My two ideas...balance weights came off driveshaft, or one of the steel belts in one of your tire has seperated, look for a noticable bulge in one of your tires side walls, It may be on the inside. Good luck

Hmmm.... maybe driveshaft out of balance, or wheels/tires out of balance?

I had a pretty serious shakeing issue with my Bonneville right after I got new tires for it last spring. Similar to yours, it would only show up starting somewhere around 60-70mph and continue as the speeds went up. Guessing that it had something to do with the tires (since it never happened before I changed them) I had a different shop rebalance the wheels/tires and the problem went away. Seems that the first shop had all the wrong size weights on all 4 wheels.

Ya know, my 2000 WS6 started doing this too, only at about 60mph. Still trying to figure it out, tires look ok. It does it for a few seconds then goes away...........

I would check the tires first - have them balanced - How many miles on them?

Is your car a 6-speed or auto. If it is a 6 speed at the 60-70 mph range where the shaking is the worst downshift into 5th. If the shaking gets worse its driveshaft if it stays the same tires. You should be able to do the same thing in an auto just bump it back into 3rd at that speed. The driveshaft will spin quicker in a lower gear so it would indicate driveshaft since there is no change in vehicle speed which would mean tires.
