Default Revs hanging and slow to return to idle, help please

I have a '01 M6 and am experiencing some idleing issues. The revs are slow to return to idle (about 700 is where it normally idles at). Upon first start-up the idles will return much quicker. Also, after extended runs on the interstate at a constant speed, when I push in the clutch my rpms will not drop at all for a couple of seconds and then SLOWLY start to fall. My cars only mod is a cat-back system; no lid, filter, or even free mods. I have cleaned the TB and IAC to see if that would help, but it didn't. No SES light/codes.

Does anyone have some insight or experience with this problem? I would apprecitate anyones help.

Mike L.

Is your AC or heater on? That usually happens to me when either of the two are on.

I think that has to do with the programming of the vehicle. There are these functions for throttle following and throttle cracker that you can supposedly change that will allow the engine to spool down faster.

I guess you could always change to a lighter flywheel. Less momentum would cause the engine to slow down faster.

Yea, I've read about these things, but the car is stock and doesn't seem to have ever been altered. Would I be able to see these parameters on a scan tool, or olny with a tuning program?

It's worse with the AC on.

I don't think you could see anything more than the IAC position with a scan tool. Maybe if the IAC position is quite open when you are having those problems you could blame it for the trouble.

Do you think it would rev down slowly if the IAC was unplugged?

That makes perfect sense, the engine has the added drag of the a/c compressor to deal with.

Had an 02 Z that did the same thing. Ironically, after I had descreened the MAF. Huh?

As stated before, check your IAC motor. It also sounds very similar to how my Cobra acted when it had a pilot hole drilled through the throttle blades, which makes me think that your throttle may not be closing entirely.

I had a similar problem ended up being a small hole in a vaccum line.

Thanks for all the helpful insight! I will be looking into this deeper this coming weekend.

MavrikTA - Yea, the problem became MUCH worse when I removed my screen. Also saw a drop in MPG and no noticable gain in power. That baby is back in now, and will stay in until I get some tuning software or scantool.

I am also having problems with pinging. I only use cheveron or shell 93 octane, and have run lots of cleaner through it. But upon accelerating, the engine pings really loud for a split second then stops, related problems? I think that my plugs are gapped to wide because of popping from the exhaust on cold startup, is this a related problem? By the way, I am running TR55's and don't remember the gap. I also think the plug may be too hot, because the pinging is much more evident in warmer weather.
