I got the german castrol 0W-40, but it scared me that it was so much thinner than the mobil1 5W-30. Is it not a deal at all?

But its not thinner, the 5W & 10W-30 Mobil 1 is just barely a 30 weight oil. After 1000 to 2000 miles of engine operation it tends to shear down to a 20 weight.
The 0W-30 German Castrol is almost a 40 weight oil, and even after 6000 miles of use is generaly still in the mid to high 30 weight count.
The difference in the 0W Weight and the 5W or 10W weight only means the Castrol (with 0W) will flow better when cold, but when it heats up the Castrol will be thicker than the Mobil 1 oil.

My personal oil analysis bears this out, you can also go to
bobistheoilguy.com
and look, members there have posted dozens - if not hundreds of used oil analysis that can be reviewed.

Apparently the German made 0W-30 is much different than other Castrol Syntec oils. It is supposed to be different than even the US Made Castrol 0W-30. I can tell you that I have seen the German 0W-30 and it does not look thin to me.

Been using Castrol Syntec since I bought my Z new... (10w-30)

A little info about Castrol Syntec and the late model Camaro:

For a short period of time there was a special GM/Castrol promotion where when you bought your car (new) you could pay a little extra to have your fluids changed out with the Castrol Synthetic fluids. If you chose this option at the time of purchase and if you continued to use Castrol fluids at all your regularly scheduled maintenance intervals, GM and Castrol would bump the warranty up to 100,000 miles of protection for any lubrication related failures... No ****... This was an option that you could get cheap only at the time of purchase and only on new Camaro's.

I guess GM had faith in the quality of the Castrol stuff. If it's good enough for GM, It's good enough for me...

Good luck with your new ride!
