Mobil 1's 5w40 is a better oil than their 0w40. Their 0w40 tends to thin out pretty quickly. (although it's still a better choice over their 5w30 or 10w30)

Patman, since all the Walmarts around me have discontinued the M1 5/40, I can't seem to find it at all. I've since gone to the German Castrol 0/30 (as you know, with great results).

At the W-Marts in my area the jugs of 5w-40 go quickly. There are usually 1 qt. bottles hanging around, though.

Good choice! GC 0w30 is still my favorite oil of all time. I recommend it above anything else.

The mobil 1 5-40, is that the truck.suv one that you are talking about? I have never seen 5-40 in the older style containers, but there is a 5-40 that is for trucks/suv's or something. If that's the right one, I'll go to that, I just want to make sure.. as that castrol oil is nowhere to be found here in CT, I have looked for it a ton of times, and never find it anywhere. I ahve been running the 0-40 and have had no problems, consumption has gone down alot from when I was running 5-30, it'a about non existant now. if the 5-40 is better, then I'll go to that, as the one I spoke about above is available around me all the time.

The Truck/Suv 5w-40 is the one in question. It seems most everyone has cottoned on to it and it's become hard to find now.

Wal-Mart only gets so much, and then you'll have to wait for the next shipment. I got two jugs last time it came in. Sorry for the other guys, but gotta take care of my own...

It has become rather common knowledge that Mobil 1 oils are a bit thin for their weight, making the 5w-40 fall within (Patman) recommended oil weights for a 30w. I believe that while the weight numbers are good, better oil analysis results are had from the new Castrol as well as the hard to find German Castrol. I don't recall analysis numbers from 5w-40 Mobil 1 being put up against the two Castrols, so a direct comparison may not yet have been made.

I wouldn't want to pay the price they would probably charge, but I bet VW dealers have the german castrol, they put that synthetic in all the turbo cars from the factory, so I'm sure they probably keep it in stock.

That's the thing, I'm not sure if there is or not. I know that there's the truck/suv formula that is 5-40, which is what I am wondering about.. is it the only one, is it fully synthetic? If it is, great, I can get that alll day long, but if it's not, and there's another one, then I have yet to see that anywhere.

I was told at 3 of my local Walmarts, that they have discontinued the M1 5/40. They didn't know if Walmart stopped handling it, or M1 stopped making it (doubtful). My stores will no longer stock it...

I've always heard good things about Amsoil. I'm sure Patman is more familiar with it, and would have hard data.

Amsoil is an excellent oil, I recommend their 5w40 European formula for use in the LS1.
